Wing Sun Hong

May 31, 1931 - June 30, 2018

Wing Sun Hong (87 years old) was born in Taishan, China, and immigrated to the United States as a teenager, residing in Detroit, Michigan, where he graduated from Cass Technical High School and then went on to study at the Detroit Institute of Technology, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.  Prior to completing his education, Wing enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

After a successful career in engineering and at the suggestion of his father, Yick Hong, Wing opened his very first Wing Hong Restaurant in Southfield, Michigan.  The success of the restaurant convinced Wing to diversify and expand operations to the developing city of Farmington Hills, Michigan.  Wing became a true pioneer in the restaurant industry by opening the very first restaurant in Oakland County serving both Chinese and Japanese Teppanyaki.  The restaurant was a true marvel for its time, resembling both an imperial Chinese palace and a Japanese fishing village to accommodate both styles of dining. Wing would go on to expand operations in Farmington Hills over the years, while opening an additional three restaurants in greater Oakland County during his business career.

Wing was married to Nina, proud parents of five sons who went on to establish careers outside of the family business. Kaleford Hong, MD, the late Waveford Hong, Electrical Engineer, Hoyman Hong, MD, Hoylond Hong, MD, and Winkle Hong, JD.  Wing and Nina remain the proud and loving grandparents of their seven grandchildren.
