Eileen Evans

March 6, 1936 - April 5, 2019

Eileen Marie Mooney Evans, 83, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, April 5, 2019.

A longtime resident of West Bloomfield and Orchard Lake, Eileen was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Eileen Mooney Evans started her undergraduate education at University of Michigan.  Before graduating, she married John and raised five children. She was a eucharistic minister at St. Colman’s and Prince of Peace parishes, her faith always playing a central role in her life. After raising her family, she finished her degree at University of Michigan Dearborn, launching into the next phase of her life as a teacher at Green and Roosevelt Elementary Schools.  She completed her Master’s Degree at Oakland University, and became a reading specialist.  She continued serving struggling readers as a tutor for adults, and later as a volunteer in an elementary classroom. Following retirement, she led an incredibly active and varied volunteer life. One of her highest priorities was working on behalf of the West Bloomfield Library through the Friends of the Library. One of her many contributions was facilitating the installation of sculptures in front of the library.  She also committed time and energy to the Friends of the Library Shop which helped fund the new Children’s section.  She had a lifetime connection to the University of Michigan including the Birmingham Alumni Association whose purpose is to provide scholarship support for young women attending the university. She loved being outdoors in her garden and actively participated in the Michigan Lily Society.  The only thing she loved more than seeing her lilies bloom was seeing her grandchildren grow.  She ran an endless string of “Grandma Camps”, visited her grandchildren in their schools, attended performances, and joined in and inspired play.  In her last weeks, as always, she lived fully--walking in the desert, playing pickleball, golfing, and reveling in the love of family and friends.

She was the daughter of the late Frances Gavin and Robert F. Mooney. She was predeceased by her brother Robert P. Mooney and sister Kathleen Upton. Eileen is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, John C. Evans, her beloved children Johnny (Bette) Evans, Maureen (Taro) Fujimori, Julie (Edward) Denner, Pat Evans (Liz Seaton), and Anne Evans (Chris Vogt). Her deeply loved grandchildren, Jason and Aaron Denner, Jessica, Sean, Sam, Caleb, Gavin, and Katie Fujimori, and Ryan Seaton-Evans and her great-grandchild, Robin Denner were the greatest joys of her life. Eileen was a dedicated aunt who loved her nieces and nephews. Eileen is also survived by numerous and loving friends and relatives.
