I Remember...

The last letters of our last names are "V" and "W" so we sat near each other for a couple of years. I was in his home room for 4 years at De. He was always pleasant with a mellow disposition. What a beautiful tribute in the obituary. What a beautiful life and family. My deepest condolences. Coincidentally I was born in Rogers, MN--very close to Osseo, MN. RIP dear classmate

I am a lector at St. Owen and I remember the kind words Deacon Mike always had for me. One time in particular, he included a story of a wonderful mother in his sermon and he told me the story reminded him of me. As a mother of young kids at the time, it meant so much to think that someone I respected thought I was doing something right. He as a wonderful person and he will be missed.

Mike came to the Dominican Republic and was such a wonderful addition to the group. Such a kind and gentle man with strength of character which I will not forget. He knew how to listen and record what he heard and saw. A great memory!

Mike and I met about 20 years ago when we began attending classes at the beginning of our journey in the diaconate. We became close friends and often shared our good times and those rough times. Hard-working and inquisitive, always with that big smile and kind demeanor, he would work to make those around him better. Mike will be dearly missed and may his goodness not be forgotten. Mike and I met when he worked in TV syndication and I worked in TV news in Madison, WI. Mike was one of those magic people we not often come across in life. He was always friendly, smiling and treated you with respect and dignity. There were many days I simply called him to lift my spirits. He and his friend Michael Bille carried that spirit in every encounter and I looked forward to seeing them at trade shows or as either of them made their way through Madison. As a Catholic and in proximity to Michigan, had I known Mike was a deacon I would have been tempted to make the trip to see him and, if I was lucky enough, to hear him preach. That would have been an honor.

We first met back in the days of NIWS. So many memories. As Michael Billie wrote, Mike was a mensch! Hard to find a better person in our business. May God continue to bless him.

Mike and my story began 15 years ago when Msgr. Ed Baldwin introduced me to Mike and asked if I could mentor him in his final year of preparation for ordination. My yes began a friendship that has left me with a closeness that will never be replaced. Rest in peace dear friend.
