Mercedita 'DeeDee' Ungab-Canete

Mercedita "DeeDee" Ungab-Canete, age 49 of Canton, passed away August 24, 2021, surrounded by family.

Mercedita was born December 7, 1971, in Tagbilaran, Philippines to Hermogenes and Melecia Ungab. She was a graduate of Holy Spirit High School and went on to study at Holy Name University, Philippines, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992. Motivated to further her education in the nursing field, DeeDee moved to the United States where she enrolled at Walden University and later obtained her Nurse Practitioners license in 2016. After moving to the United States, she began dating her one true love, Sergio Canete III, in 1995. They wed on August 8, 1998, and soon after the couple were blessed with two sons, Sergio Eric IV and Jacob Joseph.

DeeDee was very resourceful, creative, and she enjoyed sewing, baking, and cooking for her family and friends. She cared so much for everyone in her life and always put her own needs aside to take care of others. She found true happiness in making others happy. DeeDee was an inspiration and a model for unselfishness and will be greatly missed by those that were so blessed to have known her. 

DeeDee is survived by her husband Sergio Canete III of 23 years. Loving mother of Sergio Eric IV and Jacob Joseph. Dear sister of Braulio (Ellyn), Josephine (Carlos) Ungab-Castillo, Emmanuel (Maricar), and Herme (Janette) Ungab and sister-in-law of Maria (Edgardo) Albaran, Eric (Tonette) Canete, and Maria Melissa (Celerino Jr.) Jubac. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation for DeeDee will be held Wednesday, September 1st, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 851 N. Canton Center Rd., Canton. Visitation will continue Thursday, September 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Novena at 6:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, Canton. DeeDee will lie in state on Friday, September 3rd, at 12:00 p.m. until the time of her Funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at Church of the Divine Child, 1055 Silvery Lane, Dearborn. DeeDee will be laid to rest at St. Hedwig Cemetery, Dearborn Heights.
