Samuel (Simeon) William Sarris

October 21, 1924 - November 24, 2017

Beloved husband of deceased wife Joan, dear father of Ann Marie (Evans), Cynthia, and Stephanie; loving grandfather of Alexander, Maria and George – Samuel Sarris passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 24, 2017.

A Veteran of WW II, Sam was a long-time resident of Novi, MI.  The only son of William and Anna Lola Syriopoulos, he was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania and grew up in Detroit where he later attended Wayne State University.  He served in the US Air Force where he flew in combat missions in Central Europe, was appointed positions of Corporal and Technical Sergeant and was later made Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves.  He loved his family, his church, the arts and big band music. An avid train enthusiast, Sam enjoyed the history & mechanics of steam engines as well as all manner of train travel and miniature train collections. He married the love of his life Joan Chavel and the two shared a close journey together, particularly after Sam retired from the Michigan Wholesale Candy and Tobacco Business when the two worked side by side in a new business venture in “Joan’s Hallmark Store” at the Onyx Plaza for over 20 years.  He took pride in all of his daughters, encouraging and supporting their pursuits in the arts.  Later in life, he especially doted on his 3 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.  He died peacefully in his home after spending Thanksgiving, the day before, with his family around him.  May his memory be eternal.

Visitation is on Tuesday from 3-8 pm with a Trisagion at 7:30 pm at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 West 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hill, MI 48334. Visitation at the church is from 10:30 am on Wednesday with Funeral Service following at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 25225 Middlebelt Rd (south of 11 Mile).  Final resting place – Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
