Charles Shandor, age 91 of West Bloomfield, passed away December 7, 2017.

Husband to Bernice for 50 years, father to Steven (Bridgett) Piche and Catherine (Rick) Cunningham. Grandfather to Matthew and his wife Kara, Christopher and MacKenzie.  Charles was the ninth of ten children and was the last survivor.  Born to immigrant parents from Russia, Charles was raised a coal miner’s son in the hills of Pennsylvania, what he always referred to as “God’s Country”.  He was a child of the depression which certainly made him appreciate life’s simple pleasures and the value of hard work.

As a WWII Air Force veteran, Charles was able to attend college and become a Biology teacher, allowing him to share his love of science and nature.  He came to Farmington, Michigan when he was offered a job, sight unseen and remained a teacher in the Farmington Public School District for over 30 years.  He was involved with the local community, participated in the Jaycees, served on the LOC Credit union board and following his retirement he volunteered at the Farmington Hills Library for 30 years.  In 2006, Charles was elected into the FEA Teachers’ Hall of Fame, honoring him for not only his contributions to student education, but for his support of teachers’ rights through his involvement in labor negotiations throughout his career.

For recreation, Charles loved to bowl, golf, was an avid reader and excellent crossword puzzle solver.  He also enjoyed chess and card games.  Unfortunately, all these pleasures were taken away from him in his last years.  His family hopes that all of you who knew him, will remember Charles as he once was, a wonderful husband and father, a fun-loving grandfather, a true and trusted friend, and always a teacher.  He shall be greatly missed.

Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills.

In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the Farmington Hills Public Library.
