Flora Rozman

August 7, 1927 - June 29, 2018

Long lives well lived! Flora V. Rozman, age 90, went to be with her Lord on Friday June 29, 2018. She passed away while doing one of her favorite things, being on vacation with her daughter in Chicago. From the time she was taken to the doctor to the time she peacefully passed was less than 48 hours. Up until her final hours, she was living independently in the family home. She used her cane and her son would arrange for Uber car service to take her to Church services, hair appointments, the YMCA for Silver Sneakers classes and anywhere else she wanted to go.

She was born Flora Virginia Rusnak in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday August 7, 1927. When she was 6 years old she met Edward Rozman when his family moved about four blocks away from Flora’s family’s home in a middle-class Cleveland neighborhood. Flo graduated from Collinwood High in 1945, and Flo and Ed’s first official date was a movie in 1946. Flo recalled Eddie wearing navy blue striped pants and loafers with white socks, a combination she found peculiar-- but adorable. They married after an engagement of about one year on October 16, 1948 at St. Philomena Catholic Church in East Cleveland. About 80 people attended the reception at the Rusnak residence on Roxbury Road where guests danced to polkas while a family friend played the accordion. The celebration then moved to a relative’s farm in the country and continued for several days with guests staying overnight in the barn.

As Ed went on to graduate from Case Western Reserve with a degree in mathematics, Flo majored in Spanish and psychology at Fenn College (now part of Cleveland State University) before leaving school to start a family. Flo & Ed were the only members of their respective families to move away from Cleveland for Ed’s pension consultant/actuary work. Sons Gregg and Doug were born in Hartford, CT. In 1958, the family moved to the Chicago suburb of Palatine. Daughter Jane (name legally changed later to Roz) was born shortly after the move.  In 1965, the family settled in West Bloomfield, MI.

Flo had a sweet disposition and a great sense of humor. She was a devoted mother and home manager and enjoyed painting artistically, cooking and travel. A passionate traveler, she and Ed visited Australia, Austria, The Bahamas, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hawaii, Hungary, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and The Virgin Islands.  The last 2 years of her life she travelled with her daughter to Cancun, Lake Tahoe, Tampa and downtown Chicago for her granddaughter Gina’s wedding.

Flora was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years in 2016. Surviving family include sons Gregg (Deborah Brady) and Douglas (Sandi); daughter Roz (formerly Jane) (Thomas) Byrne; granddaughter Gina (TJ) Rozman-Wendle.

Visitation is Thursday July 5th from 5-8pm at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W 12 Mile Rd, Farmington Hills, MI.  Funeral service will be this Friday July 6th at 11am (viewing at 10 am.) at Bloomfield Hills Baptist Church, 3600 Telegraph Rd. Lunch at the church will follow the service. A private burial is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church or the charity of your choice.
