Helen L Gombert, 77, passed away peacefully under hospice care on January 18th , 2024.

She is survived by son Greg (Amy) Gombert, daughter Liz Gombert, sister Ruth Ann Brinkmann, 2 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, and 4 grandcats. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Dennis Gombert, her parents Arthur and Beatrice Brinkmann and sister Donna Wetzel.

Helen grew up on a farm in Rensselaer, Indiana, the middle daughter of Art and Bea.  Much of her youth was spent working on the farm and working hard in school, where she earned many accolades. She attended college at Indiana State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Education. She met Dennis at ISU and they got married in the summer of 1969. After Dennis completed his PhD, they moved to Virginia in 1975 and lived many wonderful years there until they both retired and moved to South Carolina in 2014.

Helen enjoyed many things. She loved to tend to her garden with the goal of attracting as many butterflies as possible. She loved to travel and explore, and really enjoyed going on beach vacations with her late husband, Dennis. They traveled to many places together, including the Bahamas, St Thomas, Aruba, and Hawaii.  She enjoyed playing card games with family and friends, shopping for a good deal, and making a delicious meal for her family.

Immediate family will have a private memorial at McCabe Funeral Home in Canton, MI.

Private funeral services will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA on January 29th where Helen will be laid to rest beside her husband of almost 50 years.  In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate contributions to the American Cancer Society https://donate.cancer.org/ or brain cancer research https://glioblastomafoundation.org/get-involved/donate/ .
