Robert Llewellyn Miller, Sr.

Robert Llewellyn Miller, Sr., born on January 19, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 95 on June 15, 2024. He was a distinguished scholar and researcher, earning his Bachelor of Science from MIT in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1954. Robert dedicated much of his career to the study of the structure and behavior of crystalline polymers, contributing significantly during his tenure at Monsanto Co. and later at the Michigan Molecular Institute. 

A prolific author, Robert published 69 papers and articles throughout his career, establishing himself as a respected member of the scientific community. He was a longtime member of both the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society, where he held the esteemed title of Senior Fellow.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Robert shared a deep passion for Shetland sheepdogs, which he bred and showed alongside his late wife, Peggy, starting in 1974. His meticulous pedigree work, including the development of a pioneering pedigree generation program, led to his role as archivist for the American Shetland Sheepdogs Association and its Canadian counterpart. His dedication earned him life memberships in several sheltie clubs, including the ASSA, CSSA, and the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Greater Detroit (SSCGD), where he was beloved for his contributions to the breed's community.

Robert Llewellyn Miller, Sr. was a proud family man. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he was notoriously known as Gpa or GGpa. He was most proud of seeing four generations of his family grow and flourish. He is survived by his only son Robert Llewellyn (Sue Armstrong) Miller Jr.; his grandsons Matthew (Emily Jensen) Miller, and Andrew (CaraMia Bertoni) Miller; his great-grandchildren Mabel Miller, and Hugo Miller. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Peggy (Riker) Miller; his father Wayne Miller; his mother Viviann (Williams) Miller; and his siblings.

Robert Llewellyn Miller, Sr. will be remembered fondly for his intellectual curiosity, scientific contributions, and unwavering dedication to the Shetland sheepdog breed. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a profound impact on both his professional field and his beloved hobby.
