William L. Matthews

April 16, 1940 - August 21, 2024

William L Matthews, age 84, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024. He is survived by Peggy, his beloved wife of 62 years. Cherished father of Cheryl (Bradley Conkey), the late Kevin, Ken (Judy) and Mark (Lisa). He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren including: Kevin, Mark, Nicholas (Mikaela), Liam, Jack, Brendan, Will and Jade. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mary, his sister Mary Lou (Harry) Pheney, and his brother Patrick (Carol) Matthews. He is survived by his sister, Rose Marie Held.

Bill was a proud graduate of Catholic Central High School and an alumni of University of Detroit. He was known for his hard work and discipline, having worked nearly his entire career at Plante Moran where he became a Partner in 1970, and then Managing Partner in 1993. Bill was a student of the late Frank Moran, often quoting his philosophies on how to maintain balance when you live ‘life on the tightrope’. Through Bill’s leadership, Plante Moran became a regular on Crain’s annual Best Places to Work. Upon retiring, Bill continued to offer his services to various non-profits, serving on the board of Brighton Hospital and Covenant House, and received a Child Advocacy Award from Care House of Oakland County.

After work hours, Bill was known for his sarcasm, dry humor, and wit. He often amazed audiences with jokes such as; “I once knew a man who gave up his right arm to become ambidextrous.”

He traveled often, from New Zealand to Australia, from Alaska to Ireland, and went on two Disney Cruises with his entire 16 member family. One of his favorite locations was right here in Michigan on Torch Lake, where he spent his last 30 summers cooking s’mores by the fire and watching the sun set over the blue waters.

Bill had an amazing life and legacy, and will be honored at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills, on Sunday, August 25th, with visitation from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., including a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service.
