Walter "Rusty" Voorheis

June 13, 1934 - June 3, 2025

Walter “Rusty” Voorheis, age 90 of West Bloomfield, passed away June 3, 2025. He was born June 13, 1934 to Walter and Amanda Voorheis.

Born and raised in Frankenmuth, Walter had many fond memories of his childhood. He was always tinkering with something in the garage, quickly becoming a true “Mr. Fix It”. He could build anything, including the rockets in his basement that would make their way out at dusk, lighting up the sky for all the neighborhood kids. Tracking and finding them afterwards to bring them back home was endless fun. He enjoyed many camping trips and annual hunting weekends in November and was very proud of his prize hunting dogs.

Walter proudly went on to serve his country with the U.S. Army. He graduated from Michigan State University where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, creating friendships that would last a lifetime. When Walter met and married Maureen, his love and affection for her never wavered. He made all her dreams come true as a wonderful husband and loving father. He was the most kind and patient family man.

A man of many hobbies and interests, Walter continued his love of hunting and camping. He was always excited to travel and see new places. He continued building models, mostly airplanes. He dabbled in photography, went skiing and bowling, and added carpentry to hist list, engineering any crazy idea his wife came up with in the middle of the night. He kept his mind sharp with jigsaw puzzles and word searches until the very end.

Above all, Walter loved and treasured his wife and the family they created. A selfless and genuine man who could build anything, Walter will be remembered most for the beautiful relationships he built with those he cherished the most.

Walter was the beloved husband of the late Maureen for 58 years. Loving father of James, Cynthia Mazur, and Brian (Jamie Dietrich). Proud grandfather of Rose and Demi Mazur.

Walter, along with Maureen, were laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

Memorial donations in Walter’s name can be made to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
