Charles L. Lumpkin

September 11, 1934 - August 5, 2025

Charles (Chuck) Lynwood Lumpkin was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1934 to Grace and Charles T. Lumpkin. He attended St. Anthony’s High School, where he played on the championship football team. After graduation, Chuck’s fortunes rose when he met Cathy, his future wife, at a college Sadie Hawkins dance.

Before they married, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years, helping to rebuild Europe following World War II. Upon returning to civilian life, he became a devoted husband to Cathy and worked as a mechanical draftsman for several years. Eventually, he decided to return to school to further his education.

During that time, Chuck and Cathy chose to adopt four children. So, in addition to working full-time and helping raise a lively, inquisitive, and rambunctious household, Chuck earned an engineering degree from the University of Detroit. He went on to become a computer engineer for Eaton Corporation in Southfield, Michigan.

After retiring, Chuck and Cathy spent their time traveling the world, enjoying family and friends, and attending Mass at St. Thecla Catholic Church in Clinton Township, where they lived for most of their lives.

Chuck had a deep love for the outdoors. Walking, camping, canoeing, hiking, and biking were among his favorite pastimes. Most weekends, the family could be found camping in one of Michigan’s many beautiful campgrounds. Summers were filled with road trips across the country, sightseeing, and more camping. He had a special fondness for maps and took great pride in navigating the open road.

Throughout his life, Chuck explored a variety of hobbies. At different times, he was an avid stamp collector, model hobbyist, and amateur photographer. In his later years, he became a passionate and dedicated environmental volunteer, playing a key role in the cleanup and promotion of the Clinton River basin. He believed that exploring the world creates more informed citizens—and that caring for it is essential to a sustainable future.

Chuck was the beloved husband of the late Mary Catherine (Cathy); the loving father of Christopher, Cari Brown, Candi (Christopher) Turner, and Charly (Linda); and the proud grandfather of Destin, Chaz, Riley, Mason, and the late Hollianne.
