I Remember...

Dave was at mortuary school with MFDA members I asked him if he could be my sponsor for my appreniceship. lucky for me he did. I had tried quiting smoking. early 1967. Living in the grand river funeral home I looked out the window and saw tanks and other military equiptment. Dave came in. Lets have cig. of course I did. Next day Dave wanted to go downtown (to file a DC) he brought me the old shotgun and away we went. the radio said there was a sniper on a roof at grand river and trumbell. Where were we. Yes we were there. we left the area fast. After the new funeral home was completed I became the manager. later VP-GM. later my wife sent me a girl looking for work. I hired her and Kevin is still greatfull. I grew with the McCabe family. Davd & Gisela Kevin & Sandy Katrina & Larry I never wanted to leave. Sad day. I still miss everyone.

Dave sang with the Don Large Chorus, but I don't remember the time or the shows we did together.

I have great memories of your dad from when I was younger. He was always so fun to be around and the fact that we shared the same Fourth of July birthday gave us a little connection that as a kid I thought was cool. I think of him on my birthday every year to this day. Im so sorry you had to say good bye to him, he was truly blessed to have such a close and special family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I remember how many times Katrina's dad would drop by her office to just say hello & visit. He was quick-witted & always filled with fun stories & jokes. I also remember the day life changed - he called the office for her & she quickly went to his place...he'd had a stroke...a small brain bleed. Days turned into months and hope faded for the return to his old life of friends, golf, dinners, etc. Katrina was there for him every step of the way with a joke, a smile, a tender caress & they were both grateful for the loving bond they shared as his life's journey came to a close. Rest in peace, Dave McCabe & know that you were loved.

Hello Family, Richard ("Dickie") Cregar here feeling very sad about the passing on of my Buddy "Davie" for more than 60 + years! We were golfing buddies, playing my Club Pine Lake Invitational and his Invitational at Meadowbrook for many years. 20 +! My fondest memory was the night at Pine Lake C.C. was I invited him to be the Master of Ceremonies at my induction as President of the Club. It was a BIG night with dinner Black Tie and it was sold out.300+ members. It was called "The President's Ball" I was so proud of course and after the dinner he was asked to speak-being the show man that He is did an outstanding performance. "He said President Dick Cregar gives a whole new meaning to tonight's "President's Ball" What many of the members did not know was that I had surgery a month before to remove my right testicle! Thus President's BALL! OMG Davie I loved it-My wife Cherrill choked on her dessert people were looking at each other like "what is that about" Friends that knew about my surgery laughed out loud! My dear friend david you will always be in my prayers and thoughts-I miss you already-damn who can I pick on now-you were the very best---Rest in Peace my very good friend and save a place for me in your next foresome--but not to soon-I'm 80 this March. GOD love you good friend.... Ridhard (Dickie) Cregar

I was first employed by L. David as an apprentice and student going into the funeral industry. I lived and worked in the Grand River chapel from 1971-1973. I have many fond memories of those days working with the staff and the many words of encouragement that they and David in particular offered. Funeral service is not an easy profession to spend a lifetime doing and I probably would have left it if it were not for David and his staff that gave me a great start. I will always remember those days fondly and will appreciate the mentorship and friendship that L. David offered to me.
