I Remember...

We have known Pat for 44 years. We met Pat and Joe when we all played bridge in the church league, and continued to play social bridge with her for over 25 years. There were many special dinner nights which we enjoyed very much. Pat traveled with the Nomads and on a number of ocean cruises with us. She became known as a "World Traveler". She was a special lady and friend and we will miss her very much. May she rest in peace. Ed and Joyce

When I think of Pat, I go back to my childhood visits and overnight stays with her and Uncle Joe. Being younger than mom and dad, they seemed incredibly cool, in a way that parents can never be. I remember their poodle, Casey, and the house on Rosedale; I can picture every room still. I seem to recall Uncle Joe driving a sporty little car then, and wearing those British flat caps that he seemed to favor for years. He loved ice cream--what kid could forget that?--and there was always a high probability there would be some for dessert. Pat and Joe seemed to genuinely enjoy having a pre-teen as their houseguest, which amazed me. I remember Pat as smiling and laughing so easily, as if I were greatly entertaining. And I felt terribly adult when she invited me to feed Joey when he was small and still navigating spoon-to-mouth motor skills. I think he was the first baby I fed and held; if not, he is the one I remember. When Pat and I exchanged greeting cards at Christmas in 2016, she followed up with a phone call. It was wonderful. I recognized her voice immediately, despite it having been ages since we had spoken. Her voice, her laugh, and the cadence of her speech were exactly as I remembered. And last August when we met up again in Michigan, despite the years that had passed, she projected the same intelligence, strength, and interest in life that I always associated with her. As my brother said when he received the news of her passing, "she was a real trooper!" Pat was an impressive woman, with a strong life force. I am lucky to have known her.
