I Remember...

Beth was one of the few people in life that a bad word can not be said. She always had a smile on her face, a kind word to say, and a welcoming wave no matter where I saw her. I was the neighbor that watched as she gave unconditional time and love to three little boys who became wonderful men because of her presence. I will always hold Beth close to my heart.

Beth and I grew up together in Highland Avenue Baptist Church here in Mullens, WV, although I must admit to being a few years older than Beth. She was always a beautiful, sweet person. She will be missed.

Beth and I met 60 years ago, when we were 8 years old, at WV Baptist camp in Cowen, WV. We were paired as swim buddies for Buddy Check because we had similar ability and probably because we loved swimming so much we would go in the unheated pool no matter what the temperature. We became fast friends and scheduled our trips to camp together for the next 8 years, until after our junior year in high school. I lived in Beckley and Beth lived in Mullens, a long and winding road apart in those days. But, as we became teenagers, we spent time at each others houses. We talked about life and growing up and I got to know her family, the cousins who lived next door, and of course her 2 Boston Terriers. We did a lot of swimming during those visits too. We even bravely went swimming in Granny Whitlow's farm pond with its resident snakes! (We really loved swimming) I was in Beth's wedding but then Beth moved to Michigan, then South Africa, then Michigan and I moved to Pittsburgh. We kept in touch with long, detailed, hand-written Christmas letters. Years past that way. Then amazingly, five years ago, my oldest son James took a job with Detroit Edison and moved to Ypsilanti, near Beth! So we had the opportunity to spend times together again. And it was just like time had not passed. She was just a really good friend to me and, I suspect, to all the friends she made during her life. She will be missed by all of us. (I will always think of Beth when I jump into really cold water to swim, as I now live on a small mountain lake with very cold water and a few snakes). Anna Beard Alexander

Beth was my friend in Dexter MO and I was so impressed by her kind, sweet, loving personality that I never wanted to lose her friendship. We moved to Kentucky and Beth and Wayne and Jodi and Kari moved to Michigsn and So Africa back to Michigan and we sent Christmas cards back and forth. I am so sorry this shining person is no longer in the world. I am sorry Jodi and Kari that you have lost your mother and Mrs Finney her precious daughter. I have met all 3 of you many years ago and I regret that our paths never cross again. RIP dear Beth.
