I Remember...

My dear stepson Paul, I will miss you! I will always cherish your total acceptance of me.I will always remember the day we went fishing together. And, I will never forget all the times we spent just talking and visiting at home and together for the holidays. With great joy in my heart; I know that you have been received into eternal life.

I will always remember your eyes smiling betraying the good soul that was you Paul Palace!! Also, You Paul playing cards with a person that really needed to feel as if they mattered. That snapshot of you with him as I passed by will always be with me. Thank you for ways you touched other souls in moments of time.

I didn't have an opportunity to know you for very long, but during the several months we worked together you were a great gift to me and the people we served. You had a way of quietly adding value to the lives of everyone you spoke to. When I think of you in the future, I will never forget that every single evening when you left, you sought me out and said, "Thank you for letting me work here today." Thank you, Paul, for being such a light and choosing to spend time with us.

I remember many things about Paul over the last 19+ years since Fr. Gomez introduced us. But most of all I remember the philosophical discussions and Paul's keen insight. Unfortunately, in recent years, the discussions were too infrequent. I asked each of my kids to mention a memory and their answers are as follows: Angela - "I remember him helping us get ready for a graduation party where he made his lemon rosemary chicken and homemade sausage. I also remember seeing him at McDonalds recently at lunch and talking to him. Mainly I remember him being with Joey." Matt - "Mr. Palace was very present and easy to talk to during the last few years of high school. I remember dad spent a lot of time with him then. He also hooked it up for food at my grad party; especially with his giant 2 story oven. I remember eating a burger at 'Paul's Place. Have not seen him in years, but always loved having him around. I miss him a bunch." Sean - "I remember being called the "Sportsman" for many years (inside story from JPII Tourney. He also expressed his "love" for Paul. Chris - "I have many memories with him and Joe around wrestling. I also remember him feeding us dinner (butter noodles and chicken wings) and not telling mom and dad when Joe and I got dropped off by the Police for ding dong ditching" Danny - I remember Mr. Palace, my dad and me at Starbucks in Oxford for a few years that Joe and Chris had Catechism out there. Mr. Palace and I would play checkers with the oversized checker pieces and he would always say "one for you, two for you, three for you....etc..". There are many more memories, but these cover much of why we loved the man and will miss him dearly.
