I Remember...

Jerry, We all came to say goodbye, but you will be remembered by the many people whose lives you touched in so many ways. We can shed a tear that you are gone, or we can smile because you lived and were with us for a brief time. You may not have realized that you've left an amazing legacy behind....Cindy, David, Sean (Martha), Cole and Raegan. Through them you leave this world a better place than you found it and for that you have to be so very, very proud. Rest In Peace my dearest brother....A job well done....A life well lived.

Dear Matuszak Family, Please accept the deepest condolences from the Bowman family upon the death of your dear husband and father, Jerry. I have many fond memories of Jerry who went on many (if not most!) of the camp-outs with Sean's Boy Scout troop, along with my son Michael. Jerry was a true gentleman, and I always enjoyed his company.

Jerry was at our home on Tireman many times during my brother John's seminary years. There are 5 children in our family so things were always hopping at our house. Many conversations going on at the same time. Jerry joined in the fun and, of course, the teasing. I'm so sorry he had challenges with his health. Please know he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. May God keep you and your family close.

Wordsworth's quote that: "The Child is the father of the Man," is certainly true of Jerry. Many of us "kids", who grew up with Ron, Jerry, and Mike in the long-gone Detroit Epiphany Parish, shared the same faith and values then that you do now at St. Fabian's. Your recognition of Jerry is a tribute to his life-long generosity of time and talent. I am especially grateful to Jerry and Ron who put me in touch with John Ricco when I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2012. I was surprised when Jerry was later diagnosed with the same disease. Jerry now serves as our courageous advocate to guide us on our way to the Supper at Emmaus.

Jerry was a dedicated Catholic and one of the pegs that the parish of St. Fabian hung its hat from. He still knew how to have fun though. One Sunday I was lectoring while Jerry was altar minister. He noted the date, talked to the guitarist, then gave me "marching orders." At the end of mass, I made closing announcements, then Jerry joined me at the lectern as we sang Happy Birthday to Father Brian, joined by the rest of the congregation. Father Brian had a scowl on his face but did not excommunicate us. Sto-lat my friend.
