I Remember...

Mr. Saiyad, was a great guy and had nice, nicknames for many of his students over the years. Kids loved Mr. Saiyad! He was a a kind teacher of 10 year olds and a very good 4th grade mathematics teacher; so he teamed with another 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Miller who was a good reading teacher. At a time when men teaching @ the elementary level was rare, Kal served clientele that needed, sometimes, vacated male, positive, role models. I am saddened at his passing and extend my sincere condolences to his family.

It was the 68'-69' school year and I was a 6th grader in Mr. Saiyad's class. I've reflected many times the impact that year had on me. It influenced my decision to become an educator. Mr. Saiyad not only taught content, he taught me how to learn. It wasn't just about what he taught, it was about how he taught. I still remember asking, "Mr. Saiyad, can I go to the bathroom?" His response was, "I dont know can you?" I soon learned as did others, the proper way to ask was "may I go to the bathroom?" I remember the world history class he was taking at EMU that year and how he offered to lecture "like a college professor" to us so we could learn how to take notes like a "college student", a learning strategy I used throughout my education. Prayers for Mr. Saiyad and his family. I will always remember him for the positive influence he had on my life.

I will always remember Mr. Saiyad and the impact he had on mine and my brother's lives. He was a bright light through a difficult childhood. I can credit him as being the first teacher to inspire me to break the cycle and not repeat what I learned at home. I will always remember his nickname for me and the fun jingle he sang where he used it almost daily. Prayers are lifted for his family as I know he will greatly be missed.

I will always remember Kal's sense of humor and how he was always so grateful for everything done for him, right down to the smallest things. He was a delight to know.
