Janet Kay Hilling

November 13, 1946 - December 2, 2023

Janet “Kay” Hilling passed away December 2, 2023 at the age of 77.

Kay was born on November 13, 1946, in Indiana to Garold and Hazel Osborn. The family of three moved to Plymouth, Michigan and Kay graduated from Plymouth High School. While in school, Kay met Michael Hilling at the store he managed, Consumer’s Center, in Plymouth. The pair soon became friends and started dating. On August 5, 1967, Kay and Michael were married and as the happy couple began their lives, Kay attended Eastern University. After living in Ypsilanti, the pair moved to Dearborn where they established their family, blessed with two sons, Scott and Jason. Kay was an involved parent as her children grew. She enjoyed attending their sporting events and was supportive and engaged, making personal sacrifices along the way.

While living in Dearborn, Kay became very active in her parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church where she attended Bible study classes. Kay worked for an accounting firm and home security company before retiring after several years of dedication as a secretary at Reilly Plating.

Kay was a member of the Red Hat Society and had a group of friends known affectionately as the Breakfast Club. She also traveled with close friends yearly on a variety of different trips.

Kay adored being a grandma, attending sporting events and concerts; if she was able to be there, she was. She enjoyed reading novels (especially Science Fiction), having her glass of wine, and was skilled at bead work, making jewelry for her loved ones. Kay loved to cook and hosting Thanksgiving for her family was a highlight. She liked to garden and bird watch, especially outside of her home in West Bloomfield. Kay was also an animal lover, taking care of and owning dogs throughout her life.

Kay was kind and caring, always putting others first. She was a strong woman who never complained. Kay was admirable and well loved. She will be dearly missed by her beloved family and friends.

Kay was the loving wife of Michael for 57 years; devoted mother of Scott (Jessica) and Jason (Komal); cherished grandmother of Cooper, Colby, Charley, Catherine, and Ishaan; and dear sister-in-law of Sandy and the late Carol. Kay also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Kay’s family will receive loved ones on Friday, December 8th, beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the time of her Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations to the American Heart Association, the Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and the American Lung Association are appreciated in Kay’s name.
