Bob Pratt

January 20, 1943 - October 10, 2025

Robert “Bob” G. Pratt, age 82 of Farmington Hills, passed away on October 10, 2025.

Bob was the beloved husband of Karen for over 60 years. Loving father of Robb (Valerie) Pratt and proud grandfather of Gwen and Joshua.

A man of intelligence, curiosity, and innovation, Bob earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering before beginning a long and distinguished career with Detroit Edison (DTE) in the research department. His passion for renewable energy led him to found his own company in 2002, focused on producing and installing solar power systems. A true pioneer in the field, he was one of the early advocates for electric vehicles long before they became mainstream and held multiple patents including one for charging electric vehicles at parking facilities using payments with a credit card.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Bob shared his knowledge as an instructor at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, where he taught classes on solar energy and inspired others to think toward a cleaner future.

Bob’s interests extended far beyond engineering. He was a licensed HAM radio operator (WD8AQX) who delighted in connecting with people around the world. He produced both Christmas and Easter programs broadcast on KICY AM and FM Alaska and hosted “History in the Making with Bob Pratt,” a radio segment on Michigan Don’s Oldies, sharing historical tidbits and nostalgic music from the 1950s and 1960s. His creativity also shone through his love of photography, capturing countless family memories and scenic moments throughout his life.

A devout Christian from a young age, Bob carried his faith with conviction and grace, living each day with gratitude, integrity, and a sincere devotion to God. He also served his community as a member of the Farmington Hills Planning Commission, giving back to the city he loved.

Bob and Karen shared a love of travel, often spending time in Tennessee, French River in Ontario, and at their cherished family cottage on Big Norway Lake. Whether out on the pontoon boat with his family or simply enjoying a quiet evening by the water, Bob found joy in nature, family, and the simple blessings of life.

More than anything, Bob’s heart belonged to his family. He was a deeply devoted husband, a proud father, and an adoring grandfather who found true happiness in the laughter and accomplishments of his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 1st, at 10am, Faith Covenant Church, 35415 W 14 Mile Rd, Farmington Hills. Visitation will begin at 9:30am and a light lunch to follow the ceremony.

Memorial donations in Bob’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
