Mary Jacob, age 91, passed away February 24, 2026.

Mary was born on April 28, 1934 in Payippad, a village in Kerala, India. She lost her parents Chummar Varghese and Aleyamma at an early age, but found the determination and drive to attend the prestigious Vellore Nursing School when she was 17. After graduating from Vellore, she joined the Indian Army where she worked until her marriage to Joys Jacob in January, 1964. Mary was a dedicated mother to Biju and Suman as her husband's career relocated the family from Calcutta to Bombay and eventually to Kerala.

In 1975 she made the decision to immigrate to the US both as an escape from the severe asthma that afflicted her in Kerala and to build a better life for her family. Joys and the children relocated to the US in 1980. Mary spent the next two decades working as a nurse in various hospitals in Metro Detroit until her retirement in the late 90's. Mary was an accomplished cook and found great joy in feeding those she loved. She always cared for others, as an RN, or feeding them her wonderful food creations. Her Christian faith was very important to her. She loved reading the Bible daily and singing Malayalam Geethangal. Mary had a kind and generous spirit that will be treasured for generations.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband (2014), 2 brothers, 3 sisters and her parents. She is survived by her son Biju Jacob (Dawn Benjamin), daughter Suman Panavelil (Abu) and grandchildren: Brandon, Kelvin, Gina Saxena (Rohit), Maya, and Stevie.

Visitation for Mary will be held on Saturday, February 28th, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of her Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 851 N. Canton Center Rd., Canton. Burial services will follow in White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, 621 W. Long Lake Rd., Troy.
