Joe Yakas passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend whose life was defined by hard work, determination, and deep love for his family. Born in 1929 to Lithuanian immigrant parents, Joe spent his childhood in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and Detroit, Michigan. After watching his father work dangerous jobs in coal mines and brass foundries, he vowed to pursue a different path. He graduated with honors from Detroit Southwestern High School and put himself through the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in business administration. Following college, Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Corporal in just eight weeks. He later completed eight years of service in the Army Reserves. Joe worked for Chrysler Missile and the Burroughs Corporation before dedicating more than 30 years to Ford Motor Company in engineering and managerial roles. Despite a busy career, he always made time to attend his children’s concerts, games, and activities. Joe loved sports and faithfully followed all Detroit teams, with a special place in his heart for the Michigan Wolverines. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling with friends and with his beloved wife, Nancy, and was known for setting up his “treat station”—often featuring ice cream—while watching sports on television. Joe and Nancy shared 66 wonderful years of marriage and a deep commitment to family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, and his sister-in-law, Marguerite LaPate. He is survived by his children Tom (Lisa), Julie Mannlein (Ed), Mary, and Jim (Heidi); grandchildren Joe and Brandon Mannlein, and Cole, Tyler, Michael, and Norah Yakas; and many friends. A memorial will be held Monday, April 13, 2026, at St. Kenneth Catholic Church in Plymouth, Michigan, with gathering at 10:00 AM and Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
