Sylvia R. Braisted, age 90 of Farmington Hills, passed away March 23, 2026. She was born November 2, 1935, in Detroit, to Ernst and Margareta Stannat. Graduating from Mackenzie High School in 1953, it was that same year that Sylvia would come to meet her future husband. Attending a Fireman’s Field Day with a group of friends, Sylvia met Leon, and the two quickly made their way to the dance floor. On October 23, 1956, Sylvia and Leon were married, and so began the legacy that Sylvia would build for generations to come. Blessed with four children, Sylvia was devoted to creating a loving home for her family, providing unwavering support every step of the way. As her children’s most enthusiastic cheerleader, Sylvia attended countless activities and events, a dedication that would only continue as she gained the coveted title of “Nanny”. With her “can-do” attitude, Sylvia was a shining example of what hard work and perseverance could accomplish. The values she instilled in her children were central to the successes they were able to achieve. Often called upon for strength and guidance, Sylvia was the quintessential matriarch. Her love and care for others extended beyond her husband and children, reaching extended family members as well as her faith community. At 21, Sylvia joined in the Baptist church, strengthening her commitment to the Lord. She volunteered where needed, greeting others with a warm smile and assisting with Vacation Bible School. No matter where or when Sylvia offered a helping hand, just as importantly, she offered her prayers. Her love for praying continually deepened her faith and put her in a constant connection with God and the family and friends she cherished. When in her element, Sylvia was an unstoppable force. Socially, she was the glue that brought everyone together. And whether it be growing the kids’ bowling league to 500 participants, or simply running the household, it was a challenge to keep up with her energy and momentum. When her husband retired, Sylvia looked forward to their travels, vacationing in Europe and going on cruises. She enjoyed being a snowbird, spending winters in Florida, and anticipated visits from the grandchildren during summers in Canadian Lakes. Any free time was spent working on word search and jigsaw puzzles, reading, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and various crafts. In more recent years, Sylvia was happy to become a member of the Red Hat Society, Farmington Hills chapter. Never one to seek reciprocation for the abundance of love she gave to others, Sylvia’s intentions were sincere. She desired for others to know how greatly they are loved, to understand how much they matter, and to realize how everyone has their purpose in this gift of life. In any capacity needed, Sylvia was always there for you. Her memory will continue in the hearts of those who loved her the most, the legacy of her most grateful family. Sylvia was the beloved wife of the late Leon Braisted, Jr. for 65 years. Loving mother of Jennifer, Sherri (Cliff), Leon III (Kim), and the late Brenda. Proud grandmother of Joshua, Jaclynn, Emily (Patrick), Matthew (Erin), Kyle (Paulina), Nathan (Melody), Kevin (Summer), Julie and Leon “Lee” IV (Ariel Adam). Great-grandmother of Rosalie, Jocelynn, Hannah, Grace, Elizabeth, Kian, Dean, and baby Sylvia. Dear sister of the late Otea Palmer. A Funeral Service for Mrs. Braisted will be held on Thursday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills.
