Mary Jane “MJ” Simmons, 89, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026. She was born on January 28, 1937, in Roanoke, VA.

MJ lived a life centered around the people and moments she cherished most - family, friendship, and the simple joys that brought her happiness. She was married to her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Simmons, for 30 wonderful years before his passing. Together, they shared many cherished memories, including special times spent in Mexico - moments that brought her great happiness.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and family: her son Rick and his wife Ellen; her daughter Nancy and her husband Brian; her step-son Brad and his wife Mary. MJ was a proud and devoted grandmother to Ryan, Claire, and Jake, who brought her immense joy.

She is also survived by her brother Danny (and his late wife Rita), and her sister Norma and her husband Harvey.

MJ had a true appreciation for life’s everyday pleasures. She enjoyed playing games like Rummikub, Poker, and working on puzzles. She loved listening to music and dancing any chance she had, with Motown being a favorite. She stayed active and involved in her Independence Village community, often assisting staff in organizing activities. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Phoebe, who was a constant companion.

MJ loved dining out, enjoyed good food, and was never one to pass up a great meal - especially with others. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and stories that her family will carry with them always.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the American Cancer Society in MJ’s memory.

Those wishing to honor and remember MJ are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills. A brief service celebrating her life will follow from 7:00 - 7:30 p.m.
