I never met Phil directly. But I have met the wonderful art he created in the fruits of his labor. I know Cindy and her boys. Cindy, nurtured to be the fabulous woman she is today clearly came from the fertile lands of her parent's home, their values, and life. The gifts of God's heart continue to be planted into the generations beyond oneself. Well DONE - a good and faithful one. I wish I had met you. But I guess I have... Godspeed.
Memories
In defense of Phil and hi tech. I remember being out at a mall with Phil in 1982 and he turned to me and said, "Do you know what a CD is?" I hadn't a clue, I had never heard of them, so he walked me over to the CD aisle in the store. And he told me everything, in his Phil style of way of telling a story, about what he had just read in the paper how they store music and play it back on a special player. And we both marveled at these shiny discs. And honest, he being a guy who appreciated piano music debated being one of the first to buy a CD player. One of the first. (He didn't, at least that day.) I have to admit, Phil hasn't always been ahead of the curve when it comes to high tech. But on that day he showed promise.
One spring break when I was in high school, we went to Florida to go camping and birding with my parents and Mimi and Phil. We took a break from birding and all went to Daytona Beach one afternoon (I think to make it more like a spring break for me). We drove my parents large GM passenger van (always had MI made GM vans growing up) on the beach with all the college spring breakers. We were such a contrast to the party scene on the beach. That night we were looking for a place to eat dinner. We were all really hungry and my dad was driving the van up and down the main drag looking for a restaurant. Phil sat there and read out loud every restaurant we passed by and then read them all out loud in reverse as we drove back down the strip. He was so calm and we (my family) were so hungry. Phil always seemed happy to be along for the ride and so relaxed. He is missed. Much love - Ellen and family
