Fast forward to high school... I had a group of friends from my speed skating team who were going on Spring Break in 1980, my Jr year of HS. Shockingly, I lied to Mom and told her I was invited to Florida w/ my friend Lisa and "her aunt". Long story, not as long as it needs to be, I asked Mom why she let me go if she knew I was lying. She said it was because she trusted me. Parents: do not make the same mistake.
Memories
I remember when I was 3 or 4 years old, sitting on the top step to the basement. Mom was in the basement, doing the laundry with a wash board and a wringer. Of course, I didn't know that at the time. At that moment, I was a bored toddler, wanting the attention of my Mom.
So I sang out - "Mom-ma".
And she replied in the same sing-song voice - "Just-a-Minute". :-)
(There was always a smile in Mom's voice, but my 4-year-old self was not satisfied...)
"It's always 'just a minute' with you!"
Mom scrubbed the clothes of 9 children and 2 adults on a washboard. She pushed the wet clothes through a wringer and hung those wet clothes out to dry, regardless of the weather.
That's just one of the daunting tasks Mom gladly undertook everyday to provide an incredible home for her family..a memory I apparently will never forget.
