Lincoln Avery, age 91, passed away peacefully on April 8th, 2023. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Smith Avery and predeceased by his parents, Alexander Avery and Ruth Bartlett Avery. Lincoln was born on May 23rd, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Holland High School, earned a BS in education from Michigan State University in 1953, and a Masters in Education from Wayne State University in 1960. He was a member of the ROTC at Michigan State and served in the Army from 1953-1956. He married Mary on August 18th, 1956 in Hancock, Michigan. Following their wedding, they moved to Farmington Hills, Michigan where they enjoyed 58 years of marriage. Lincoln spent his teaching career with Southfield Public Schools as a teacher, principal and administrator. He was passionate about public service and dedicated much of his life to his community and promoting the beautiful state of Michigan. He enthusiastically provided education and recognition for beautification and restoration projects throughout the state. He served on the PTA for each of his children’s schools and held numerous volunteer positions at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, Optimist Club of Farmington/Farmington Hills, Beautification Commission of Farmington Hills, and Keep Michigan Beautiful. Lincoln's family would like to thank the staff at Novi Lakes Health Campus and Open Arms Hospice for keeping our father safe and joyful. Mr. Avery is survived by his sister, Mary Tolley (James) and his children, Charles Avery (Kathleen), Molly Avery Gray (Kevin) and Andrew Avery (Nichole). He was so proud of his ten grandchildren and their accomplishments, Amanda White (Matt), Kristen Baldinger (Justin), Kristian Avery (Esthefani), Kole Fehling, A.J. Avery (Kasey), Kyle Gray, Rachel Weiss (Ryan), Taylor Gray, McKenzie Avery and Colin Gray. He was a great grandfather to 7 and also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many friends. A celebration of life for Mr. Avery will take place on Saturday, May 13th, with a social gathering beginning at 2:00 p.m. followed by his Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills. There will be light refreshments served at the church following his service.
