Leta Gayle Green, née Barnes, of Canton, passed away peacefully at home on July 21, 2026, at the age of 79, after living with dementia and two minor strokes. She was born on September 28, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan.

Gayle was a caring, hardworking, humble, empathetic, joyful, thoughtful, respectful, generous, loyal, and incredibly strong woman. To those who knew and loved her, she was so much more than a mother, grandmother, wife, and friend. She was the rock of her family and the person everyone could turn to. She was the one people called when they needed guidance, comfort, encouragement, or simply someone who would always be there. She listened with genuine care, offered thoughtful advice, and if there was anything she could do to help, she never hesitated. Whether supporting someone personally or professionally, Gayle gave of herself freely and changed countless lives through her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering belief in others. Her influence shaped careers, strengthened families, inspired friendships, and left every person she met feeling valued and encouraged.

Gayle had a strong, dynamic personality and a quiet confidence that naturally drew people to her. She was often the heart of every gathering, leading conversations with warmth, humor, and insight while making everyone around her feel welcome. Though she carried herself with grace and took pride in her appearance, she was never more interested in receiving compliments than giving them. She celebrated the strengths of others, lifting people with sincere encouragement and making them believe in themselves.

Gayle was a proud graduate of Cody High School, Class of 1964. She went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University, her Master's degree from Eastern Michigan University, and her Doctorate from the University of Michigan. Her passion for education extended far beyond her own studies. Gayle began her career as an elementary school teacher before taking time away from her career to raise her three children. During that time, she continued teaching through adult community education. She later returned to educational leadership, serving as a supervisor of adult community education with Garden City Schools, Director of Community Education for Willow Run Schools, Principal of Willow Run High School, Superintendent of Willow Run Schools, and ultimately Chief Academic Officer for the Macomb Intermediate School District before retiring. Gayle was incredibly proud of the many achievements she accomplished throughout her distinguished career and the countless students, educators, and families whose lives she influenced.

Gayle found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. She loved cruising and traveling with her best friends Diane and Jon, reading a good book, shopping, cooking, having season tickets to the Fisher Theater, and taking family trips to the zoo. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, taking walks with her best friends, her dogs, and her husband. She could often be found sitting in her chair reading or watching one of her favorite shows. She loved serving as a sacristan at St. Thomas A Becket Church and was heavily involved with St. Vincent de Paul, where she dedicated her time to helping others and encouraging people to live better lives. She also loved sewing, quilting, and scrapbooking that brought her happiness throughout her life.

Books were one of Gayle's greatest passions. She shared a lifelong love of reading with her closest friends, spending decades discussing stories, authors, and characters, creating memories through the thousands of books they enjoyed together. She was also one of the most determined people anyone could know. Once she set her mind to accomplishing something, whether for herself or alongside those she loved, she made sure it happened. Her determination, paired with her generous spirit, inspired those around her to dream bigger and believe more deeply in themselves.

Gayle's friendships were among life's greatest blessings. She was fiercely loyal, deeply compassionate, and the kind of friend who loved wholeheartedly. Those fortunate enough to know her often described feeling as though they shared one heart and one mind with her because of the depth of her understanding, encouragement, and unwavering support. She had a remarkable gift for making friends feel like family, and the love she gave enriched their lives in immeasurable ways.

Gayle's greatest accomplishments in life were not measured by her degrees, awards, or distinguished career, but by the family she loved so deeply. For 56 years, she shared a rare and unconditional love with her husband, Robert. They were each other's best friends, sharing laughter, joy, common interests, and a partnership built on unwavering love and understanding.

As a mother, Gayle's love for her three children, Christopher, Nori, and Matthew, was unconditional and unwavering. She devoted herself to raising them and later watched with pride as they built lives of their own. She was always there to guide them, support them, and remind them of their worth. She was deeply proud of each of them and cherished the family they became.

Being a wife, mother, and grandmother was at the heart of who Gayle was. Later in life, Gayle devoted herself to raising her granddaughter, Hannah. To her grandchildren, she was their magical, irreplaceable Grammy, the kind of love that felt straight out of a movie. From American Girl dolls and trips to Barnes & Noble to zoo outings and cheering on sports, she created memories that will last a lifetime. She taught her family the importance of grace, manners, respect, and, most importantly, the strength and power of family.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Robert Green; her sons, Matthew Green and Christopher Green; her cherished grandchildren, Hannah Green, Camilla Green, Cody Green, and Matteo Green; her brother, Donald Barnes, and his wife, Jayne Barnes; her brother-in-law, Larry Green, and his wife, Aggie Green; and her sister-in-law, Laura Green. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Norman and Vivian Barnes; her daughter, Nori Green; her brothers-in-law, Richard Green and Fred Green and his wife, Mary Rae Green.

Gayle's memory will live on through the family she loved so deeply, the lifelong friends who became family, the many lives she influenced, and the countless lessons she taught simply by the way she lived. Her love was a gift; her presence was a comfort, and her legacy will continue through every life she touched.

Though her passing breaks our hearts, we find comfort in knowing that Gayle is now at peace and reunited with loved ones. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and remembered. Thank you for reading her final chapter.

A memorial gathering for Gayle will be held on Friday, July 31st, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with an evening service at 7:00 p.m., at McCabe Funeral Home, 851 N. Canton Center Road, Canton, Michigan.
